Earlier there were several cases where an iPhone always lost to an Android phone because of it's fragility .
Apple now uses the strongest Gorilla Glass available in the market . And boy, that's very tough ( Check out the experiments done on the iPhone 5 after the break ) .
iPhone probably gave a good beat to Samsung galaxy S3 , you can see the crash test in the below videos .

The crash test of older iPhones , the most probable scene was that you'll see an iPhone completely shattered
. A drop from shoulder high did bend the frame around the phone a bit. And it took a few, purposeful drops from more than five feet high to break the iPhone’s Gorilla Glass screen, which is very nice to see.
While I’m glad to see the handset hold up so well, I’m still planning on using a case.
According to Apple , the new glass technology used in the iPhone 5 is about 20 times stronger than plastic .

According to youtube.com and http://www.webpronews.com , the iPhone 5 survived a shot from a .50 cal rifle .The phone was completely and utterly destroyed. What about a shot from a Colt 45? With the right equipment, it apparently survives.
iPhone 5 screen protector company ClearPlex wanted to put their new product to the ultimate test. They bought two iPhone 5s and shot both of them with a Colt 45. One of the devices didn’t have a screen protector, while the other did. The results are pretty surprising.
Also the Anodized Aluminium back plate used for iPhone 5 , is far the best because it hardly gets any scratches also if it does get a few they can be easily cleared by wiping off the surface .What do you reckon ?
