Introducing the Fusion Drive

Intoducing the fusion drive

With the introduction of the new iMac and iMac Mini's , Apple also introduced the Fusion Drive - a hybrid Hard Drive that Apple suggested for the new iMac's .

As Apple explains that , the storage option aims to merge the fast performance Flash drives with a more affordable Hard Drive technology . The fusion Drive couples a 128 flash storage with 1 TB or 3 TB .

Flash Drives offer speed and reliability , but are quite expensive  . Most of the laptops come with flash drives , but with the Desktops, reducing the disk space isn't an option .

So how does it work ?

Phil Schiller said that the fusion drive is partitioned into two parts , one part contains your 128 gigs of Flash Drive and the remaining portion is your HDD .
So the most common Mac OS X apps like iPhoto , iMovies or Aperture and stored in the flash drives so that you can get  a faster access to your commonly used apps . At the start all the in-built Mac apps are stored in the flash drive.

The most exciting feature of this fusion drive is that it is intelligent enough to recognize your daily used apps and transfer them to the flash drive and transfer the rarely used app to the Hard Drive , interesting isn't it?

Apple added a couple of additional points for those considering the storage option. Users can add one separate section, or partition, to the hard disk, but not to the flash memory. Also, users cannot add external drives to the Fusion Drive.
