Lightning Cables ended up with a surprise

Introducing a new connector Lightning, Apple had two main objectives - reducing the size and guarantees that third-party accessory manufacturers will not be able to produce  without a license. In the web, there were even rumors that the new cables contain some chips authentication. And that was confirmed today by Appleinsider.

It is reported that the company Chipworks «penetrated" one of the cables and the Lightning found at the base of a rather complex electrical circuit, manufactured by Texas Instruments (TI). Chip is labeled BQ2025, find the specification which are not removed.

TI produces chips labeled as BQ2022, BQ2023, BQ2024 and BQ2026. However, they have no relation to smartphones and are used in the fuel gauge. But they all share the presence of proprietary interface SDQ, relevant to security. It is logical to assume that Chipworks found BQ2025 chip is also equipped with something similar.
The study revealed the presence of the chip EPROM (erasable programmable memory) of 64 or 128 bits, a small number of analog circuits as well as "a large number of transistors and capacitors." Studies of the chip is still in progress.

Lightning protection cables are similar to the one used in the cartridges for printers. While Chipworks notes that Apple is clearly trying to reduce the cost, activated protection is simple. By the way, the network has already appeared rumors that it has successfully hacked . It is possible that the company subsequently it and complicate.
